New, Free Civil War Reenactor Magazine!: The Civil War Citizens & Soldiers Digest

How exciting! There's a new magazine for Civil War reenactors. It's been disheartening to see a few of the hobby's publications canceled, such as the Civil Was Historian Magazine.

You can read the first issue of The Civil War Citizens & Soldiers Digest by clicking the widget below:

Or by visiting their website at http://www.citizenssoldiersdigest.com/ . Head on over there and check out their magazine! This months publication includes articles about authentic reproductions and period dancing.

  2. Great publication free to all! Smart move on the publishers part to have an online newsletter to keep costs down and have full color images to boot! Thanks for the link!

  3. Sweet! I was looking for a publication on reenacting to follow.

And hey, isn't that Johnny Clem on the cover? Johnny Clem is way up there on my list of military heroes =) Stories of courage like his should never be forgotten.

Oldest surviving veteran of the war, he also had an incredibly long military career. Lied about his age and "enlisted" as a drummer boy at age 10, became the youngest First Sergeant at age 12, retired as a Brigadier General in 1915 and died in 1937. The army completely reinvented itself during his 54 years of service. He spanned from the Civil War until just before World War II broke out.

Can anyone fully comprehend how many changes occurred in this country's society, politics, technology and military during his lifetime?

  4. Speaking of the article on dancing, I find it amusing how incredibly dangerous they thought a ballroom waltzing. Fainting, vertigo, brain and spinal injuries... Linking arms together and twirling is hardly a mosh pit. If they saw the way young people dance now, they'd surely condemn us all to hell.

    1. I've seen quite a few ladies get thrown a little too hard at balls. It pays to wear period undergarments.
